How to Search for CREATION Health Principles Online

The following are search strategies in MEDLINE via PubMed (www.PubMed.gov) for each of the CREATION Health principles. There are two strategies for each principle. The first is a comprehensive search strategy designed to retrieve all relevant articles on the topic. The second is a very specific strategy intended to retrieve fewer, but more relevant results.

These are a guide and can be modified as needed.

MEDLINE provides its own vocabulary called MeSH terms – short for Medical Subject Headings – that enable powerful and accurate searches. Typically, a thorough search will combine MeSH terms with regular keywords in order to find the most information.

You’ll see that the search terms are connected by a capital ‘OR’. This tells the database that the terms are similar, so the results can include any or all of the words. The [Mesh] indicates a MeSH term, [MAJR] indicates an article main topic and the [TIAB] instructs the database to search in the title and abstract for the term.

Choice

The operational definition of CHOICE is evolving as our research progresses. In our theoretical framework, CHOICE is often a dependent variable, i.e. all of the other CREATION Health principles influence the choices we make. Currently, our focus is on the precursor to choice behavior: readiness to change, based on the Transtheoretical Model of stages of change (Prochaska JO, DiClemente CC. Stages and processes of self-change of smoking: toward an integrative model of change. J Consult Clin Psychol. 1983 Jun;51(3):390-5.

The comprehensive search strategy incorporates the concepts of CHOICE that emerged from our focus groups of patients and administrators in addition to the stages of change model.
