Exploring The Science of Whole-Person Health
The Center for Whole-Person Research knowledge base is a collection of published studies that investigate the relationships between CREATION Life principles and chronic conditions. This collection includes peer-reviewed journal articles that report measureable health outcomes and/or health behavior changes.
Studies in the knowledge base are graded for study design and quality based on the following criteria:

The CREATION Life principles were operationalized based on the work of Des Cummings, Jr.1 and focus groups of patients, community members, and AdventHealth, formerly Adventist Health System, administrators. The diagnoses included are those identified in the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) of the Affordable Care Act.
Based on these concepts, we searched for published information in the scientific literature (MEDLINE via PubMed, 1966-current) using a combination of controlled vocabulary (MeSH terms) and keywords for the diagnoses and the Trust, Interpersonal Relationships, and Outlook principles. Click here for search strategies.
Studies were included if they met the following criteria: 1) English language; 2) empirical studies using quantitative methodology (qualitative studies and case reports were excluded), and 3) and identifiable effect size and statistical significance of the relationship provided.
Studies were graded according to the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence Appraisal Tool and the following rubric:
Type of Study | Generalizable Results | Sufficient Sample Size | Adequate Control | Use of Validated Instrument | Grade |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Randomized Controlled Trial | Y | Y | Y | Y | 1A |
Randomized Controlled Trial | Y/N | Y | Y/N | Y/N | 1B |
Randomized Controlled Trial | Y/N | N | Y/N | Y/N | 1C |
Quasi-experimental Study | Y | Y | Y | Y | 2A |
Quasi-experimental Study | Y/N | Y | Y/N | Y/N | 2B |
Quasi-experimental Study | Y/N | N | Y/N | Y/N | 2C |
Cohort Study | Y/N | Y/N | Y/N | Y/N | 3 |
Cross-Sectional Study | Y/N | Y/N | Y/N | Y/N | 3 |

For those principles thoroughly represented in the literature - e.g. Rest, Activity, and Nutrition - summaries of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and/or core papers are provided. Choice and Environment will be included in the future.
Free full-text articles are available to all users. AdventHealth employees may access the full-text articles available from AdventHealth Medical Library electronic subscriptions.
The knowledge base is updated every six months.
